Regarding: Network Bangla’s Cyclone Appeal
Many people will be aware of the recent cyclone that has devastated Bangladesh. Cyclone Sidr struck Bangladesh’s south-western coast on Thursday 15th of November. Intensifying quickly to reach winds of up to 150mph, the cyclone has been claimed to be the worst that Bangladesh has experienced in over 15 years. The death toll has reached over 3000 and is increasing everyday, with the numbers of those being left homeless easily into the hundred thousands.
There is no doubt that the people of Bangladesh need major help, and need this help urgently. Many countries and charities have pledged vast amount of money, but this unfortunately is still not enough. Every one of us can do something, whether it is donating online to charities that are running Appeals for the cyclone, or through fundraising activities organised by groups and organisations. Network Bangla is one such non-profit community organisation that is working in association with Muslim Aid, to raise funds for the Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal. They have three strategies towards the fundraising, which will hopefully raise large sums of money and involve all the community. Volunteers will be collecting donation boxes from Muslim Aid and taking them to local businesses in the East London area, and persuade the businesses to have these boxes on display and encourage their customers to donate. These will be then picked up by the volunteers at regular intervals, so that the money is given straight away to Muslim Aid to put to use where it is urgently needed. The second strategy is to encourage restaurants to sign up to the Appeal by donating a certain amount from their busiest nights of trades to the Appeal. Businesses participating in this scheme will be listed on the Network Bangla website www.networkbangla.co.uk in recognition of their good efforts. Finally, Network Bangla is holding an event ‘Lal Shobuj’ to commemorate Bangladesh Victory Day on Sunday 9th December 2007, in Birmingham. In light of the recent tragedy, Network Bangla will be holding raffles and taking donation boxes around to raise funds for the Appeal during the event. More details of this can be found at www.networkbangla.co.uk/upcomingevents.php Network Bangla is an organisation that was formed to address the network opportunities available within our community. Alongside building a cohesive network within the community, Network Bangla also helps to raise money for charities through various fundraising activities. Previously they held an Eid Dinner in October to help raise money for the Muslim Aid Bangladesh Flood Appeal. If you would like to help with any of these initiatives, please get in touch with Network Bangla by emailing network@networkbangla.co.uk Cyclone Sidr has devastated Bangladesh during a time when the country was still trying to recover from the Floods, therefore help is needed urgently. The cyclone has severely damaged people’s homes, laid waste to land growing crops as well as killing livestock in the thousands. It is imperative that aid is provided as quickly as possible, with the highest priority being the provision of safe drinking water – as contamination has occurred as a result of the cyclone. In addition food and medicine is required along with other relief supplies to ensure help is provided to those who need it. Please think of all those unfortunate people, and help where you can. Donations can also be made directly to Muslim Aid via their website www.muslimaid.org or over the telephone on 020 7377 4200. Lal Shobuj, commemorating Bangladesh Victory Day
Network Bangla is an organisation which has been created to address the networking opportunities available within our community. On Sunday 9th December 2007, Network Bangla is organising 'Lal Shobuj' - a Bangladeshi Victory Day Networking Event, at Mirage Banqueting Suites, Birmingham, with the event being the organisation's fourth since it's launch in August earlier this year. As an organisation, amongst many other aims, Network Bangla hopes to promote Bengali culture, and reinforce significant dates from Bengali history into the minds of Bengali people living in the United Kingdom. The 16th of December is one such important date, as it is Victory Day. The Bengali community is one that has countless talented individuals, which rival the rest of the United Kingdom and are performing exceptionally well. However, one way Network Bangla can help to push the community forward and obtain even more success, is to help facilitate individuals with skills and aspirations, supporting Bengali-led businesses and working alongside existing community-based projects. At 'Lal Shobuj', Network Bangla hopes to bring the local community together in Birmingham and the surrounding areas, providing them with a platform to interact with one another and to celebrate the day when Bangladesh declared victory. The event is a perfect example of one the organisation's key characteristics - embracing the past to focus on the future. The afternoon will consist of a fantastic showcase of entertainment, guest speakers, stalls and food, and will culminate in a grand networking session. Network Bangla warmly invites you to attend the event to help raise awareness of the history of Bangladesh, so that everyone can work together and continue to help the Bengali community make huge strides forward.
